SCHEDULED WORKSHOPS

 

Members of the Manitoba Mushroom Society may attend the workshops, meetings and forays for free. Non-members pay $10 for a workshop with exceptions noted in the workshop schedule and cannot participate in the Member Meeting or Forays. To become a member of the Society go to the Members page.

 

2026 February 16, "Darwin's Elves" Webinar Only
In-person is not an option due to public holiday, so the Meeting part of this event is deferred.
Paul Kroeger, UBC Medicinal Mushrooms Biochemist, will present about poisonous mushrooms and mushroom poisonings and how to avoid becoming a victim.
Webinar is free to MMS Members, $10 for non-Members.
University of Manitoba, University of Winnipeg Students and Red River College Students may participate for free.

2026 February 25, 6:00 pm, Mushrooms Growing Workshop
At Wilderness Supply Company Winnipeg Store, 55 Isabel Street
Omar Abdelhamid and Donna Kurt present information on growing mushrooms from spore to kitchen and garden. Ecological impacts of using non-native species grow kits is discussed as well.
Wilderness Supply will provide participants a 10% discount for in-store purchases of regular price products except for boats.
Omar Abdelhamid, of Miro's Mushrooms, will provide participants a 30% discount for mushroom grow kit purchases.
The workshop is free for Society Members, $10 for non-members.
Registration is required before February 24.

2026 March 4, 6:30 pm, Wool Felting Mushrooms and Member Meeting
At University of Winnipeg
Free and only for Society Members and UW/UM students, staff, faculty.
Join Heather Sadler of Manitoba Mushroom Society for a second Wool Felting Mushrooms workshop to continue to learn about how to make wool felted mushrooms; the focus will be on chanterelles this time.
  Registration closes midnight 2026 March 2, room information will be emailed to you on March 3.
In order to ensure we reserve a kit for you (3 needles, felting pad, felting wool, at cost fee) please register by 2026 February 16.
If you register after February 16, you will likely get a seat but you may not be able to reserve a felting kit for you; however you can always learn by observing others felting and participate in the Meeting part of the event.
On March 3 you will be emailed a confirmation email with information including the UW Room number.

2026 January 19, Wood Decaying Fungi, and Special Meeting
Jon Makar provide an excellent overview of wood decaying fungi, their impacts on ecosystems, arborist safety, and edibility.
University of Winnipeg, 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Over 50 people attended this event, mostly members of the International Arborists Association
The Special Meeting was for Society Members Only, the Workshop was for Members and non-Members.
Society Bylaws, Board of Directors, President's Report and Treasurer's Report were unanimously voted in favour of.

2026 January 4, 2:00 pm, Chaga Gathering
At Mountain Equipment Company Winnipeg Store
Donna Kurt presented information on chaga identification, life cycle, harvest, uses.
MEC provided participants a discount coupon for in-store purchases.
Free workshop for all wishing to attend.

2026 December 13, 12:00 pm noon - Edible Mushrooms of Manitoba
At D.A. Niels Gourmet Kitchenware, 485 Berry St.
Donna Kurt presented updated information about edible mushrooms in Manitoba.
DA Neils provided participants a discount for in-store purchases.
Free workshop for all wishing to attend. Limited seating.

2025 December 10, 6:00 pm - Wool Felting Mushroom Workshop
University of Manitoba, Animal Sciences Building
Heather Sadler shared how to make wool felt mushrooms with member participation.
Thanks to Heather for sharing her skills and purchasing supplies for participants.
We also participated in the NAMA Fungi Film Festival, an exciting and fun event.

2025 December 8, 7:00 pm - Lichens of Manitoba, and Members Meeting
University of Manitoba, Animal Sciences Building, and Online (Hybrid).
Charles Burchill provided an introduction to Lichens of Manitoba.
Thanks to Charles for sharing his enthusiastic knowledge of lichens and samples of Manitoba lichen species.
